Pierre Bayle

Pierre Bayle (1647–1706) was a French Protestant philosopher and writer whose historical criticism, religious skepticism, and defense of toleration shaped Enlightenment debates.

French Wars of Religion: A series of conflicts between Catholics and Protestants in France from 1562 to 1598. The violence of France’s religious divisions formed the historical backdrop to Bayle’s defense of toleration.
Historical and Critical Dictionary: Bayle’s reference work, first published in 1697, pairs biographical entries with extensive critical notes. Its notes use historical evidence and competing interpretations to unsettle confident judgments.
