Pierre Duhem

Pierre Duhem (1861–1916) was a French physicist, historian of science, and philosopher. He developed thermodynamic theories, argued that experiments test networks of assumptions, and documented the sophistication of medieval science.

Thermodynamics: The study of heat, work, energy, and the macroscopic properties of matter. Duhem made foundational contributions to its theoretical foundations.
Duhem–Quine thesis: The thesis that hypotheses cannot be tested in isolation from auxiliary assumptions and background theories. Duhem’s analysis of physics supplies one origin of this underdetermination problem.
Energetics: A nineteenth-century approach to physics that organized phenomena around energy and its transformations. Duhem developed a systematic physical theory centered on thermodynamic principles.
Ernst Mach: An Austrian physicist and philosopher who analyzed scientific concepts and criticized metaphysical assumptions. Mach’s empiricism offers a contemporary philosophical comparison to Duhem’s view of theory.
Philosophy of science: The philosophical study of scientific methods, evidence, theories, and aims. Duhem’s account of testing remains a central problem in this field.
Physical theory: A structured system of mathematical propositions used to represent and predict physical phenomena. Duhem treated theories as organized systems rather than direct descriptions of reality.
Auxiliary hypothesis: An assumption used alongside a central hypothesis to derive testable predictions. A failed prediction may implicate these supporting assumptions rather than the central theory.
Thermodynamic potential: A state function, such as free energy, used to predict equilibrium and changes in a thermodynamic system. Duhem helped develop the mathematical treatment of thermodynamic potentials.
Henri Poincaré: A French mathematician and physicist whose work included influential reflections on scientific conventions and theories. Poincaré and Duhem both examined how mathematical structures shape physical science.
Scientific realism: The view that successful scientific theories describe a real world, including entities beyond direct observation. Duhem questioned whether physical theory should be read as a literal description of reality.
