Pierre-Simon Laplace

Pierre-Simon Laplace (1749–1827) was a French mathematician, astronomer, and physicist whose work systematized celestial mechanics and advanced probability and mathematical physics.

Celestial mechanics: The application of mathematics and physics to the motion of celestial bodies. Laplace made planetary motion a central test of Newtonian mechanics.
Mécanique céleste: Laplace’s multivolume mathematical treatment of gravitational motion in the solar system. This work synthesized his account of planetary perturbations into a landmark treatise.
Joseph-Louis Lagrange: An Italian-French mathematician who made foundational contributions to mechanics and analysis. Lagrange and Laplace were leading contemporaries in mathematical astronomy.
