Pietà

A depiction of the Virgin Mary mourning the dead Christ, especially in sculpture and painting. The subject gives visual form to grief, compassion, and the body of Christ after the Crucifixion.

Pietà (Michelangelo): A marble sculpture by Michelangelo showing Mary holding Christ’s body, completed around 1499. Its polished marble and youthful Mary became defining choices in the subject’s Renaissance treatment.
