Pieter Zeeman

Pieter Zeeman (1865–1943) was a Dutch physicist who discovered that magnetic fields split spectral lines, an effect that bears his name. He shared the 1902 Nobel Prize in Physics with Hendrik Lorentz.

Hendrik Lorentz: A Dutch theoretical physicist whose work on electromagnetism explained the Zeeman effect. Lorentz supplied the theory that connected Zeeman’s spectral observations to charged particles in atoms.
Zeeman effect: The splitting or shifting of spectral lines caused by a magnetic field. This is the phenomenon Zeeman discovered and measured.
Leiden University: A Dutch research university founded in 1575, where Zeeman conducted the work associated with his discovery. Zeeman’s magnetic-field spectroscopy was carried out during his Leiden research years.
Atomic physics: The study of the structure and behavior of atoms, including their interactions with fields and radiation. The effect gave physicists a tool for probing atomic states through spectra.

Spectroscopy: The study of how matter interacts with electromagnetic radiation across wavelengths or frequencies. Spectroscopy provided the methods and questions behind Zeeman’s experiment.
Electron: A negatively charged subatomic particle found in atoms and involved in electric currents and chemical bonding. Lorentz interpreted the effect using charged particles whose motion produces light.
Heike Kamerlingh Onnes: A Dutch physicist who established a leading low-temperature laboratory in Leiden. Onnes and Zeeman were colleagues in the Dutch physics community around Leiden.
Atomic spectrum: The pattern of electromagnetic radiation emitted or absorbed by atoms at characteristic frequencies. The regularity of atomic spectra made line splitting detectable.
