Pietism

Pietism is a Protestant renewal movement that emphasizes personal faith, practical devotion, Bible study, and disciplined Christian living. It arose among German Lutherans in the late seventeenth century.

Philipp Jakob Spener: A German Lutheran theologian whose 1675 work Pia Desideria helped launch Pietism. His reform proposals gave early Pietism its program of renewed Bible study and practical faith.
Martin Luther: A German theologian whose challenge to Catholic authority helped initiate the Protestant Reformation. Pietism developed within the Lutheran tradition shaped by Luther’s theology.
Collegia pietatis: Small devotional meetings for Bible reading, prayer, and discussion associated with early Pietism. These gatherings were Spener’s practical model for strengthening faith beyond Sunday services.
Moravian Church: A Protestant denomination descended from the Unitas Fratrum and renewed at Herrnhut in the eighteenth century. The Moravians developed close ties with German Pietism and carried its missionary energy abroad.
Pia Desideria: Philipp Jakob Spener’s 1675 proposal for reforming Lutheran church life through renewed devotion and lay participation. This text set out the complaints and reforms that shaped Pietism’s beginnings.
Lutheranism: A Protestant Christian tradition rooted in the teachings of Martin Luther and the Reformation. Pietism was a renewal movement within Lutheran churches, not a separate denomination at its origin.
