Pigeon racing

Pigeon racing is a competitive sport in which trained homing pigeons are released from a designated location and timed as they return to their home lofts.

Homing pigeon: A domesticated pigeon bred or trained to return to its home loft from unfamiliar locations. Racing depends on pigeons’ ability to find their loft after release.
Animal navigation: The processes animals use to determine and follow routes through their environments. Pigeon homing is one specialized form of animal navigation.
Pigeon racing training: The conditioning and route practice used to prepare pigeons for competitive returns to their lofts. Training builds fitness and reinforces reliable returns from increasingly distant release points.
Pigeon show: A competition in which pigeons are judged for appearance, breed standards, or presentation. Unlike racing, pigeon shows rank birds by conformation rather than return speed.
Pigeon loft: A shelter where pigeons are housed and from which they are trained to return. A bird’s designated loft is the destination used to measure its race performance.
Magnetoreception: The ability of an organism to detect information from Earth’s magnetic field. Magnetic cues may contribute to pigeons’ orientation, though their precise role remains debated.
Pigeon breeding: The planned mating of pigeons to produce offspring with selected traits. Racers are often bred for health, orientation, and sustained flight performance.
Dog racing: A sport in which dogs compete by running around a track or over a course. Both sports time animals, but pigeon racing tests homing over a route.
Pigeon band: A ring placed around a pigeon’s leg for identification and record keeping. Identifying each racer links its arrival time to its owner and entry.
Olfactory navigation: Navigation that uses spatial patterns in environmental odors as directional information. Experiments suggest pigeons can use olfactory cues to build navigational maps.
