Pilbara Craton

An ancient, stable region of continental crust in Western Australia, noted for exceptionally preserved rocks dating back to the Archean Eon.

Archean: The eon from about 4.0 to 2.5 billion years ago, when Earth’s oldest preserved rocks formed. Most exposed Pilbara rocks formed during this eon.
Plate tectonics: The theory that Earth’s outer shell is divided into moving plates whose interactions shape the surface. Whether modern-style plate tectonics operated during Pilbara crust formation remains debated.
Dresser Formation: A volcanic and sedimentary rock formation in the Pilbara, dated to about 3.48 billion years ago. Its hydrothermal deposits and sedimentary structures preserve evidence of early environments.
Banded iron formation: A chemical sedimentary rock made of alternating iron-rich and silica-rich layers, common in Precambrian strata. The Hamersley Basin contains some of the world’s largest and best-known examples.
Origin of life: The set of scientific questions about how living systems first arose from nonliving chemistry. Pilbara evidence constrains possible environments for life’s emergence but does not settle its origin.
Pilbara Supergroup: A thick succession of volcanic and sedimentary rocks deposited in the Pilbara region during the Archean. Its rock sequences preserve much of the craton’s early geological history.
Craton: An old, stable part of continental lithosphere that has resisted major deformation for billions of years. The Pilbara is a well-preserved example of this type of continental nucleus.
Strelley Pool Chert: A roughly 3.43-billion-year-old chert formation in the Pilbara containing stromatolites and other possible biosignatures. It is a key site in debates about early life and the interpretation of ancient textures.
Stromatolite: A layered structure produced by microbial communities or their interaction with sediment. Pilbara stromatolites are studied as possible records of early microbial life.
Archean atmosphere: Earth’s atmosphere during the Archean Eon, whose composition differed from today’s oxygen-rich air. Pilbara minerals and sediments provide clues to atmospheric chemistry in deep time.
