Pilot-wave theory

Pilot-wave theory is an interpretation of quantum mechanics in which particles have definite positions guided by a wavefunction. It reproduces standard quantum predictions while treating measurement outcomes as determined by particle configurations.

Schrödinger equation: A linear equation describing how a quantum state changes over time. Its evolving wavefunction guides particle motion in the theory.
Louis de Broglie: A French physicist who proposed that matter has wave-like properties. He introduced a particle-guiding-wave theory at the 1927 Solvay Conference.
Copenhagen interpretation: A family of interpretations emphasizing quantum states, measurement, and probabilistic outcomes. Unlike pilot-wave theory, it does not generally assign definite trajectories between measurements.
Quantum nonlocality: The dependence of quantum predictions or dynamics on spatially separated systems in ways unavailable to local classical theories. Entangled particles can have guiding dynamics that depend on distant configurations.
Guiding equation: An equation specifying particle velocities from the wavefunction in pilot-wave theory. It converts the wavefunction into trajectories for definite particle positions.
Solvay Conference: A series of international physics meetings founded in 1911. The 1927 meeting featured de Broglie's presentation of his theory.
Many-worlds interpretation: An interpretation in which quantum evolution produces branching, noninteracting worlds. It keeps wavefunction evolution universal rather than adding particle trajectories.
Quantum measurement problem: The conflict between continuous quantum evolution and definite measurement outcomes. Definite particle configurations provide outcomes without a special collapse postulate.
Quantum equilibrium hypothesis: The hypothesis that particle configurations are distributed according to the wavefunction's squared magnitude. This distribution recovers the statistical predictions of ordinary quantum mechanics.
David Bohm: An American theoretical physicist who developed a deterministic interpretation of quantum mechanics. His 1952 papers revived and extended de Broglie's pilot-wave approach.
