Pimelic acid

Pimelic acid is a seven-carbon dicarboxylic acid with the formula C₇H₁₂O₄. Its two carboxyl groups are separated by five methylene groups.

Dicarboxylic acid: An organic compound containing two carboxyl groups. Pimelic acid belongs to this class, with carboxyl groups at both ends of its chain.
Acid dissociation constant: A measure of an acid’s tendency to donate a proton in solution. Pimelic acid has two ionizable carboxyl groups, each with an acid dissociation behavior.
Nylon 6,7: A polyamide made by condensation of hexamethylenediamine with pimelic acid. Pimelic acid supplies the seven-carbon diacid component of this nylon.
Adipic acid: A six-carbon dicarboxylic acid with the formula C₆H₁₀O₄. It has one fewer carbon than pimelic acid and is a major nylon precursor.
Carboxyl group: A functional group consisting of a carbonyl group bonded to a hydroxyl group, written –COOH. Two carboxyl groups give pimelic acid its defining acidic functionality.
Carboxylate: The conjugate base formed when a carboxylic acid loses a proton. Deprotonation converts pimelic acid’s terminal carboxyl groups into carboxylates.
Hexamethylenediamine: A six-carbon diamine used as a monomer in polyamide production. It reacts with pimelic acid to form the repeating amide links in nylon 6,7.
Suberic acid: An eight-carbon dicarboxylic acid with the formula C₈H₁₄O₄. It differs from pimelic acid by one additional methylene group.
Alkane: A saturated hydrocarbon containing only carbon–carbon single bonds. The five internal methylene units form a saturated carbon-chain segment.
Esterification: A reaction that forms an ester, commonly by combining a carboxylic acid with an alcohol. Either or both acid groups can be converted into ester groups.
