Pineal gland

The pineal gland is a small endocrine organ near the center of the brain that secretes melatonin and helps synchronize circadian rhythms with the light–dark cycle.

Melatonin: A hormone produced mainly by the pineal gland that signals biological night and influences sleep timing. The pineal gland’s principal hormone carries its timing signal to tissues throughout the body.
Epithalamus: A region of the diencephalon that includes the pineal gland and habenular structures. The pineal gland is a neuroendocrine structure within this brain region.
Sleep–wake cycle: The recurring pattern of sleep and wakefulness regulated by circadian and homeostatic processes. Melatonin helps signal sleep timing without acting as the sole controller of sleep.
