Pinyin

Pinyin is a system for writing Mandarin Chinese pronunciation with the Latin alphabet. Hanyu Pinyin is its official standard in China and the most widely used system.

Mandarin Chinese: Mandarin Chinese is a group of Sinitic languages, including the standardized variety used in China and Taiwan. Pinyin represents the pronunciation of Standard Chinese, a standardized form of Mandarin.
Pinyin tone mark: A Pinyin tone mark is a diacritic placed over a vowel to indicate a Mandarin tone. Tone marks turn otherwise identical spellings into representations of distinct Mandarin syllables.
Chinese language reform: Chinese language reform comprises efforts to standardize spoken Chinese and reform its writing and pronunciation systems. Pinyin grew from twentieth-century efforts to promote literacy and standardize pronunciation.
Chinese input method: A Chinese input method converts keystrokes or other input into Chinese characters on an electronic device. Pinyin-based input lets users type Latin letters and select matching Chinese characters.
Simplified Chinese characters: Simplified Chinese characters are forms of Chinese characters standardized with reduced or altered strokes, mainly in mainland China. Pinyin was adopted alongside character simplification, but it is a pronunciation notation rather than a character script.
Chinese syllable: A Chinese syllable is a spoken unit typically consisting of an initial, a final, and a tone. Pinyin spells syllables by combining initials and finals, with tone marked separately.
Tone sandhi: Tone sandhi is the systematic change of a tone due to neighboring tones or a linguistic environment. Pinyin usually writes lexical tones, even when Mandarin pronunciation changes them in connected speech.
Zhou Youguang: Zhou Youguang was a Chinese economist and linguist who led the committee that developed Hanyu Pinyin. He chaired the working group that shaped the system adopted in 1958.
Chinese language education: Chinese language education is the teaching and learning of Chinese languages, including Mandarin as a second language. Pinyin introduces Mandarin pronunciation and supports early reading instruction.
Chinese character: A Chinese character is a written sign representing a syllable and usually a morpheme in Chinese writing. Pinyin records pronunciation with Latin letters; it does not replace the character system in ordinary Chinese text.
