Pioneer 10

Pioneer 10 was a NASA spacecraft launched in 1972 that became the first probe to cross the asteroid belt and make close-up observations of Jupiter.

Jupiter encounter (Pioneer 10): Pioneer 10’s 1973 flyby that returned the first close-up images of Jupiter. The mission’s central event revealed Jupiter’s atmosphere, magnetosphere, and radiation environment.
Pioneer 10 spin stabilization: The spacecraft’s method of maintaining orientation by rotating around its principal axis. Spin stabilization kept the probe steady without a complex three-axis pointing system.
Pioneer program: A series of United States space missions that explored the Moon, planets, and interplanetary space. Pioneer 10 was one of the program’s most consequential missions to the outer Solar System.

Pioneer 10 and interstellar space: The outward journey of Pioneer 10 beyond the region dominated by the Sun’s planetary system. Its trajectory made the spacecraft an early emblem of humanity’s reach beyond the planets.
