Pioneer program

The Pioneer program was a series of U.S. space missions conducted from 1958 to 1978, exploring the Moon, interplanetary space, and the outer planets.

Pioneer 1: A 1958 U.S. lunar probe that failed to reach the Moon and returned data about Earth's radiation environment. It was among the program's first missions and revealed radiation belts despite missing its lunar target.
Deep-space tracking: The measurement of spacecraft position and motion using radio signals sent between spacecraft and ground stations. Radio tracking let mission teams follow Pioneer probes across vast distances.
International Geophysical Year: A 1957–1958 international scientific collaboration that coordinated observations of Earth and enabled the first artificial satellites. The program's first lunar missions grew from the scientific and political momentum of this period.
Jupiter exploration: The scientific investigation of Jupiter and its system by spacecraft, telescopes, and other observations. Pioneer 10's 1973 flyby opened the era of close-up spacecraft study of Jupiter.
Pioneer 4: A 1959 U.S. spacecraft that flew past the Moon and entered a heliocentric orbit. It became the first U.S. probe to escape Earth's gravity, extending the program beyond lunar attempts.
Gravity assist: A trajectory maneuver that changes a spacecraft's speed and direction by using a planet's motion and gravity. Pioneer 10 and 11 used planetary encounters to redirect their journeys through the outer solar system.
Space Race: The Cold War competition between the United States and Soviet Union to achieve milestones in space exploration. Pioneer missions formed part of the U.S. effort to demonstrate space capability.
Saturn exploration: The scientific investigation of Saturn and its system through spacecraft and remote observations. Pioneer 11's 1979 flyby provided the first close-up spacecraft observations of Saturn.
Pioneer 10: A 1972 spacecraft that made the first close-up exploration of Jupiter and continued outward from the solar system. Its Jupiter encounter marked the program's first successful exploration of an outer planet.
Radioisotope thermoelectric generator: A power source that converts heat from radioactive decay into electricity. Radioisotope generators powered the distant Pioneer 10 and 11 after sunlight grew weak.
