Piperazine

Piperazine is a six-membered saturated ring with four carbon atoms and two nitrogen atoms opposite each other. Its two nitrogen atoms make it a versatile building block in chemical synthesis and pharmaceuticals.

Heterocyclic compound: A cyclic compound whose ring contains at least one atom other than carbon. Piperazine belongs to this broad structural family because its ring contains nitrogen.
Basicity: The tendency of a chemical species to accept a proton or donate an electron pair. Piperazine’s nitrogen atoms accept protons, allowing the molecule to form salts.
Anthelmintic: A drug or substance that kills parasitic worms or expels them from the body. Piperazine itself has been used to treat intestinal roundworm infections.
Adolph Strecker: A German chemist known for work in organic chemistry, including the Strecker amino acid synthesis. Strecker reported the preparation of piperazine in the nineteenth century.
Occupational exposure limit: A regulatory or advisory threshold for workplace exposure to a hazardous substance. Workplace controls address irritation risks from handling piperazine and its dust.
Saturated compound: A compound whose carbon framework contains no carbon–carbon double or triple bonds. Piperazine’s ring is saturated, unlike aromatic nitrogen rings.
Protonation: The addition of a proton to an atom, molecule, or ion. Protonation changes piperazine’s charge and affects its solubility and interactions.
Piperazine adipate: A salt of piperazine and adipic acid formerly used as an anthelmintic medicine. This piperazine salt is a specific formulation used against certain intestinal worms.
Strecker synthesis: A reaction that produces amino acids from aldehydes, ammonia, and cyanide sources. It is often associated with Adolph Strecker but is distinct from his preparation of piperazine.
Skin sensitization: An immune response that causes allergic skin reactions after contact with a substance. Piperazine can sensitize skin, making repeated occupational contact a concern.
