Knowra Piroxicam Piroxicam Piroxicam is a long-acting nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug in the oxicam class. It reduces pain and inflammation, especially in arthritis, by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes.
Cyclooxygenase : Cyclooxygenase enzymes convert arachidonic acid into prostaglandin precursors involved in inflammation, pain, and other physiological functions. Piroxicam suppresses these enzymes, reducing prostaglandins that contribute to pain and inflammation.
Osteoarthritis : Osteoarthritis is a joint disease involving cartilage loss, bone changes, and pain that commonly worsens with age. Piroxicam can relieve osteoarthritis pain and inflammation but does not reverse joint damage.
Meloxicam : Meloxicam is an oxicam nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug used to treat pain and inflammation, particularly in arthritis. It shares piroxicam’s oxicam structure but generally has a shorter half-life and different dosing.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug : A nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug is a medicine that reduces pain, fever, and inflammation without being a corticosteroid. Piroxicam belongs to this broad drug family, whose shared effects include gastrointestinal and kidney risks.
Prostaglandin : Prostaglandins are locally acting lipid compounds that regulate inflammation, pain, blood flow, and other bodily processes. Reduced prostaglandin production explains both piroxicam’s symptom relief and some of its harms.
Rheumatoid arthritis : Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammatory joint pain, swelling, and damage. Piroxicam may reduce rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, but it does not control the underlying autoimmune disease.
Ibuprofen : Ibuprofen is a propionic-acid nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug used for pain, fever, and inflammation. Compared with piroxicam, ibuprofen is shorter-acting and commonly used for brief, self-limited pain.
Oxicam : Oxicams are a chemical class of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs characterized by an enolic-acid structure. Piroxicam is a member of this class, alongside drugs such as meloxicam.
Pharmacokinetics : Pharmacokinetics describes how a drug is absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and eliminated by the body. Piroxicam’s unusually long elimination half-life shapes its dosing and persistence after treatment stops.
Ankylosing spondylitis : Ankylosing spondylitis is chronic inflammatory arthritis primarily affecting the spine and sacroiliac joints. Piroxicam has been used to relieve the inflammatory pain of this condition.
