Pitirim Sorokin

Pitirim Sorokin was a Russian-American sociologist who founded Harvard University’s sociology department and developed theories of social change, social stratification, and cultural dynamics.

Social mobility: Movement of individuals or groups between positions in a society’s social structure. Sorokin studied how vertical movement between social ranks shapes societies.
Social and Cultural Dynamics: Sorokin’s multivolume study of long-term changes in societies’ cultural systems and social organization. This work presents his central framework for interpreting cultural change.
Russian Revolution: The political upheavals of 1917 that ended imperial rule in Russia and brought the Bolsheviks to power. Sorokin participated in revolutionary politics before imprisonment and exile redirected his career.
