Pixel

A pixel is the smallest addressable element of a digital image or display. Its value encodes image information, while its physical size and appearance depend on the device.

Raster graphics: Digital images represented as grids of discrete samples. A pixel is one sample in the grid that defines a raster image.
Sampling (signal processing): The process of measuring a continuous signal at discrete positions or times. Digital images form when spatial light or scene information is sampled onto a pixel grid.
Pixel art: Digital artwork that deliberately uses visible pixels as its visual units. It turns the pixel grid from a technical limit into an expressive style.
Vector graphics: Images described by geometric shapes and paths rather than fixed grids of samples. Unlike pixel-based images, vector graphics can scale without resampling a raster grid.
Image resolution: The amount of detail represented by an image, often expressed as pixel dimensions or density. Pixel count sets an image’s sampled dimensions, but does not alone determine displayed sharpness.
Color space: A mathematical system for representing colors as numerical coordinates. Pixel values acquire color meaning only through an encoding such as RGB or Lab.
Image interpolation: Methods for estimating pixel values at positions between existing samples. Resizing images requires estimating new pixel values from nearby samples.
Voxel: A sample element representing a value in a three-dimensional grid. A voxel extends the sampled-cell idea into three dimensions.
Color depth: The number of bits used to represent the color of a digital image element. Color depth determines how many pixel color values can be encoded.
Demosaicing: The reconstruction of full-color image pixels from a color-filtered sensor array. Camera sensors often capture partial color samples that software converts into pixel values.
