Plain weave

Plain weave is a fabric structure in which each weft thread passes alternately over and under successive warp threads. Its balanced interlacing creates a regular grid on both fabric faces.

Warp and weft: Warp threads run lengthwise in a woven fabric; weft threads cross them widthwise. Plain weave forms where these two thread systems cross in alternating order.
Yarn: Yarn is a continuous strand of fibers or filaments used to make textiles. Warp and weft yarns are the elements interlaced in plain-weave cloth.
Muslin: Muslin is a plain-woven cotton fabric, commonly made in lightweight grades. Its simple structure makes plain weave easy to see in an everyday textile.
Satin weave: Satin weave is a structure with long warp or weft floats that create a smooth, lustrous face. Its long floats contrast with plain weave’s frequent crossings and relatively even surface.
Weaving: Weaving interlaces two or more thread systems to make fabric. Plain weave is the simplest common structure produced by this process.
Loom: A loom is a device that holds warp threads under tension while weft is inserted. Its thread arrangement enables the repeated crossings required by plain weave.
Poplin: Poplin is a woven fabric with fine ribs across its surface, often made with a plain-weave structure. Its characteristic crosswise rib can arise from differences in yarn size or density.
Basket weave: Basket weave is a fabric structure in which groups of warp and weft threads interlace as units. Grouping threads reduces the one-by-one alternation characteristic of plain weave.
Thread count: Thread count is the number of warp and weft threads within a specified fabric area. The density of plain-weave interlacements affects surface texture and fabric weight.
Interlacing: Interlacing is the crossing arrangement that binds threads together in woven material. Plain weave relies on the most regular alternating interlacement.
