Planck length

The natural length scale √(ℏG/c³), approximately 1.6 × 10⁻³⁵ metres, formed from the reduced Planck constant, Newton’s gravitational constant, and the speed of light.

Reduced Planck constant: The constant ℏ = h/(2π), which sets the scale of quantum action. It supplies the quantum scale in the Planck length’s defining expression.
Quantum gravity: A theoretical framework intended to describe gravity using quantum principles. The Planck length is the scale at which quantum-gravitational effects are expected to become significant.
Minimum length: The hypothesis that physical measurements or spacetime have a smallest resolvable length. The Planck length is often proposed as such a limit, but that interpretation is not established.
Compton wavelength: A quantum length scale associated with a particle’s mass and the reduced Planck constant. Unlike the Planck length, it depends on a particle’s mass rather than gravity’s strength.
Newtonian constant of gravitation: The constant G that sets the strength of gravity in Newtonian physics and general relativity. It supplies the gravitational scale in the Planck length’s defining expression.
Planck energy: The energy scale formed from ℏ, G, and c at which quantum-gravity effects are expected to be strong. It is the energy counterpart of the Planck length’s characteristic scale.

Schwarzschild radius: The radius of the event horizon of a nonrotating, uncharged black hole of a given mass. Equating this gravitational radius with a particle’s Compton wavelength motivates the Planck scale.
Speed of light: The speed at which light propagates in vacuum, denoted c and invariant in special relativity. Its cube appears in the denominator, converting the constants into a length.
Planck time: The time unit √(ℏG/c⁵), approximately 5.4 × 10⁻⁴⁴ seconds. It pairs with the Planck length through the light-travel relation between distance and time.
