Planetary nebula luminosity function

The distribution of planetary nebula brightnesses in a galaxy, especially in the [O III] 5007-ångström emission line. Its nearly consistent bright-end cutoff provides a standard candle for estimating extragalactic distances.

[O III] 5007 emission line: A prominent forbidden oxygen emission line at 5007 ångströms, produced by doubly ionized oxygen. This line defines the luminosity function most commonly used for distance measurements.
Extragalactic distance scale: The collection of methods used to measure distances beyond the Milky Way. The luminosity function is one rung in this broader system of distance indicators.
