Planetary system

A star or stellar remnant and the planets, moons, dwarf planets, asteroids, comets, and other bodies gravitationally bound to it.

Star: A luminous sphere of plasma held together by gravity and powered by nuclear fusion. Its mass and radiation shape the system’s structure and long-term evolution.
Protoplanetary disk: A rotating disk of gas and dust surrounding a young star, from which planets can form. It supplies the material from which planets and smaller bodies assemble.
Solar System: The planetary system gravitationally bound to the Sun. It is the nearest and best-studied example of a planetary system.
Circumbinary planet: A planet that orbits around both stars in a binary star system. It belongs to a planetary system whose central gravitational source is a stellar pair.
Exoplanet: A planet that orbits a star beyond the Sun. The growing exoplanet census tests how common different system architectures are.
Planet: A large, nearly round body orbiting a star that has cleared its orbital neighborhood. Planets are the defining major bodies orbiting the central star.
Planetary migration: A change in a planet’s orbit caused by interactions with a disk, other bodies, or tides. Migration can rearrange a system long after planets begin forming.
TRAPPIST-1: A nearby ultracool dwarf star with seven known roughly Earth-sized planets. Its compact, resonant planets offer a sharply different architecture from the Solar System.
Rogue planet: A planetary-mass object that travels through space without orbiting a star. It lacks the stellar host that defines a planetary system.
Planetary habitability: The capacity of a planet to support conditions suitable for life. System layout and stellar behavior help determine whether habitable environments can persist.
