Planets beyond Neptune

Planets beyond Neptune are worlds orbiting the Sun outside Neptune’s orbit. No such planet is officially recognized; proposed distant worlds remain hypothetical.

Planet Nine: A hypothetical planet proposed to explain the clustering of some distant trans-Neptunian objects. It is the best-known proposed planet beyond Neptune, but has not been detected.
Orbital resonance: A dynamical relationship in which orbiting bodies have periods close to a ratio of small integers. Resonances can preserve or reshape the distant orbits used to test planet hypotheses.
Percival Lowell: An American astronomer who founded the Lowell Observatory and searched for a planet beyond Neptune. His unsuccessful Planet X search helped establish the modern tradition of outer-planet hypotheses.
Dwarf planet: A body orbiting the Sun that is nearly round, is not a moon, and has not cleared its orbital neighborhood. Dwarf planets beyond Neptune are confirmed bodies, unlike the hypothetical planets discussed here.
Planet X: A hypothesized unseen planet invoked to explain anomalies in the outer Solar System. The name has been used for several proposed distant planets, including Planet Nine.
Kozai–Lidov mechanism: A gravitational effect that exchanges orbital inclination and eccentricity in hierarchical systems. It can alter distant objects’ orbits and complicate interpretations of their clustering.
Clyde Tombaugh: An American astronomer who discovered Pluto in 1930 while searching for Lowell’s Planet X. The search for a predicted distant planet led to the discovery of Pluto, not the sought perturbing world.
Brown dwarf: A substellar object too light to sustain ordinary hydrogen fusion in its core. A brown dwarf would be far more massive than the planetary worlds proposed in the outer Solar System.
Trans-Neptunian object: An object in the Solar System that orbits the Sun at a greater average distance than Neptune. Their orbits supply much of the evidence used to infer a possible distant planet.
N-body simulation: A numerical method for modeling the motion of multiple bodies interacting through gravity. Simulations test whether a proposed planet can produce observed orbital patterns.
