Plant (deception)
A person secretly placed in a group or situation to influence events, gather information, or create a false impression.
Undercover agent: A person who conceals their identity or affiliation to gather information or conduct an operation. Like a plant, an undercover agent hides a role, but usually acts with formal authorization.
Infiltration: The covert entry of a person or group into an organization or community to gain access or influence. A plant is a person used to carry out infiltration or exploit access already gained.
Decoy: A person or object used to divert attention from a target, route, or operation. A decoy distracts openly or covertly; a plant is defined by concealed placement within a setting.
Paranoia: Persistent suspicion that others intend harm, often without sufficient evidence. Claims that someone is a plant can express or intensify suspicion within a group.
False flag operation: An operation designed to make an act appear to have been carried out by someone other than its actual perpetrator. A plant can help make an event or message seem to originate from the wrong side.
Human intelligence: Information collected from human sources through interaction, recruitment, or observation. A plant may function as a concealed human source inside a target group.
Double agent: An intelligence agent who appears to serve one side while secretly serving the opposing side. A double agent is defined by divided allegiance, not merely by being secretly positioned.
Conspiracy theory: An explanation of events that attributes them to a secret plot by powerful actors. Allegations of planted participants often become part of broader claims about hidden coordination.
Disinformation: False or misleading information deliberately spread to deceive its audience. A plant can deliver disinformation in person, making a fabricated account seem spontaneous.
Agent provocateur: An agent who encourages others to commit unlawful or discrediting acts, often to expose or undermine them. This is a specific kind of plant whose covert role is to provoke.
