Plant morphology

Plant morphology studies the external form and structural features of plants, including roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and patterns of growth.

Root: A plant organ that anchors the plant and commonly absorbs water and minerals from soil. Roots are a principal organ whose shape and branching morphology are compared.
Meristem: Plant tissue containing dividing cells that produce new organs and contribute to growth. Meristems are the sites where new roots, stems, and leaves begin.
Plant anatomy: The study of the internal tissues and microscopic structure of plants. It examines internal organization, while morphology focuses on external form and arrangement.
Plant identification: The process of determining a plant’s identity from observable traits and other evidence. Distinctive leaves, flowers, and growth forms often provide the first diagnostic clues.
Plant adaptation: An inherited trait that improves an organism’s performance in a particular environment. Root, leaf, and stem forms can reflect adaptations to local conditions.
Stem: A plant axis that supports leaves and reproductive structures and transports water, minerals, and sugars. Stem structure determines how leaves and reproductive organs are arranged in space.
Apical dominance: The suppression of lateral bud growth by signals associated with a plant’s shoot tip. It helps determine whether a shoot grows as one main axis or branches.
Plant physiology: The study of the functions and processes that sustain plant life. Physiology asks what plant structures do; morphology describes their form.
Plant key: A tool that identifies organisms through a sequence of choices between contrasting traits. Identification keys translate morphological observations into a repeatable procedure.
Convergent evolution: The independent evolution of similar traits in separate evolutionary lineages. Similar plant forms can arise in unrelated lineages facing comparable pressures.
