Plantation

A large agricultural estate organized to produce crops for sale, often for distant markets. Historically, many plantations relied on enslaved or otherwise coerced labor.

Cash crop: A crop grown primarily for sale rather than for the producer’s own use. Plantation production centered on crops that could be sold in regional or overseas markets.
Portuguese colonization of Brazil: The establishment and expansion of Portuguese rule in Brazil beginning in the sixteenth century. Portuguese colonists developed large export estates, especially for sugar, along Brazil’s coast.
Olaudah Equiano: An African writer and abolitionist whose autobiography described enslavement and helped advance the British antislavery cause. His account documented the violence and human consequences of Atlantic plantation slavery.
Emancipation: The legal process of freeing people from slavery. Emancipation ended legal ownership of enslaved people but did not automatically redistribute plantation land.
Gang system: A plantation labor regime in which groups of enslaved workers performed tasks under continuous supervision. This system organized field labor on many American plantations.
Sugar plantations in the Caribbean: The large estates that produced sugar in the Caribbean, increasingly using enslaved African labor from the seventeenth century onward. Caribbean sugar estates became a defining model of plantation production.
Harriet Tubman: An American abolitionist who escaped slavery and repeatedly helped enslaved people reach freedom. Her life illustrates resistance to the slaveholding system that sustained plantations.
Sharecropping: An agricultural labor arrangement in which tenants pay landowners with a share of the crop they produce. After slavery, sharecropping often kept formerly enslaved families tied to plantation land and debt.
Task system: A labor regime assigning workers a defined amount of work, after which they could use remaining time more freely. It differed from the gang system in how plantation labor was paced and supervised.
Tobacco cultivation in colonial Virginia: The production of tobacco as a major export crop in colonial Virginia during the seventeenth century. Tobacco estates helped establish plantation agriculture and racial slavery in the Chesapeake.
