Plasma display

A flat-panel display in which electrically excited gas cells emit ultraviolet light that makes red, green, and blue phosphors produce visible images.

Gas-discharge lamp: A light source that produces light by passing an electric current through ionized gas. A plasma display scales gas-discharge physics into individually controlled image-forming cells.
Pixel: The smallest addressable element of a digital image or display. A plasma pixel is assembled from three independently driven color subpixels.
LCD: A flat-panel display that modulates a backlight with electrically controlled liquid crystals. Unlike plasma cells, LCD pixels control light from a separate backlight.
High-definition television: Television systems that display images at substantially higher resolutions than standard-definition formats. Large plasma panels became a prominent way to display high-definition television images.
Burn-in: Persistent image retention caused when display elements age unevenly after showing static content. Uneven phosphor aging could leave lasting marks on plasma screens displaying fixed images.
Plasma: An ionized gas containing free electrons and charged ions that responds collectively to electromagnetic fields. Electrical discharges turn the cell gas into the plasma that generates ultraviolet radiation.
Subpixel rendering: A display technique that uses individual color subpixels to increase apparent image detail. Each plasma pixel’s red, green, and blue subpixels are separately energized.
OLED: A display technology in which organic light-emitting diodes produce light directly. OLED pixels emit visible light directly, without plasma’s gas discharge and phosphor conversion.
Home theater: A home entertainment setup designed to reproduce a cinema-like audiovisual experience. Plasma’s large screens, wide viewing angles, and dark-room contrast suited home theaters.
Energy consumption: The amount of energy used by a device or system during operation. Plasma panels often consumed more electricity than competing LCD televisions, especially on bright images.
