Plasma physics

Plasma physics studies ionized gases in which charged particles collectively respond to electromagnetic fields. It explains phenomena ranging from laboratory discharges to stellar winds and fusion plasmas.

Debye shielding: The reduction of electric fields over short distances in a plasma as mobile charges rearrange. It explains why plasma behavior is collective despite electric forces acting between individual particles.
Ionization: The process by which an atom or molecule gains or loses electrons and becomes charged. Ionization creates the charged particles that make plasma responsive to electromagnetic fields.
Magnetic confinement fusion: A fusion approach that uses magnetic fields to confine hot plasma long enough for nuclear reactions. It applies plasma confinement physics to the goal of sustained fusion energy.
Irving Langmuir: An American chemist and physicist who developed foundational research on gas discharges and introduced the term “plasma.” His discharge-tube studies helped define the subject and its characteristic collective behavior.
Neutral gas: A gas whose particles have no net electric charge overall and whose large-scale behavior is usually dominated by collisions. Unlike a plasma, it generally lacks the strong long-range collective response of mobile charges.
Plasma frequency: The natural oscillation frequency of charged particles in a plasma displaced from equilibrium. It sets the characteristic timescale for a plasma's collective response to perturbations.
Electromagnetic field: A physical field describing electric and magnetic influences produced by charges and currents. Plasma's defining collective behavior arises through interaction with electric and magnetic fields.
Inertial confinement fusion: A fusion method that compresses and heats a small fuel capsule with intense energy pulses. It tests plasma behavior under rapid compression and extreme transient conditions.
William Crookes: A British chemist and physicist whose experiments with low-pressure gas discharges revealed unusual luminous phenomena. His early discharge-tube observations helped motivate later investigations of ionized gases.
Gas discharge: An electrically conducting gas created when an applied field drives ionization and charged-particle motion. It is a common laboratory setting where plasma physics meets electrical engineering.
