Platoon

A military unit made up of several squads or sections, usually led by an officer. Its size and organization vary by service, country, and period.

Squad: A small military unit whose members operate together under a designated leader. Several squads commonly form the platoon's core.
Chain of command: A hierarchy that assigns authority and reporting relationships within an organization. It connects platoon leadership to higher headquarters and subordinate squads.
Infantry: Ground combat forces trained to fight on foot, sometimes supported by vehicles. Infantry platoons are a common form of the unit.
Section (military unit): A small military subunit whose size and role vary among armed forces. In some armies, a section is smaller than a platoon; elsewhere it may be a building block.
Platoon leader: The person responsible for leading a platoon and directing its operations. This officer or other designated leader commands the unit.
Mission command: A command approach that gives subordinates latitude to act within a leader's intent. Platoon leaders use intent and delegated initiative when conditions change.
Armored warfare: Military operations centered on armored fighting vehicles and their coordinated employment. Armored forces also organize crews and vehicles into platoon-sized elements.
Company (military unit): A military unit usually composed of several platoons and commanded by a captain or equivalent. A company normally sits above a platoon in the organizational hierarchy.
Platoon sergeant: An experienced noncommissioned officer who supports a platoon leader and oversees enlisted personnel. The sergeant manages discipline, readiness, and daily coordination.
Military communications: Systems and procedures used to exchange information among military forces. Reliable communications coordinate squads and connect the platoon to its company.
