The play within a play

A dramatic device in which characters perform a play inside a larger play. The embedded performance can mirror, disrupt, or reveal truths about the surrounding action.

The Mousetrap: A performance staged by Prince Hamlet to test whether Claudius murdered King Hamlet. Hamlet uses the embedded play to provoke a visible reaction from the suspected murderer.
