Playfair's axiom

Playfair's axiom states that through a point not on a given line, exactly one line can be drawn parallel to that line. It is equivalent to Euclid's parallel postulate in Euclidean geometry.

Euclidean geometry: A geometric system in which points, lines, and distances obey Euclid's postulates. Playfair's axiom characterizes the familiar parallel behavior of this geometry.
Triangle angle sum: The sum of the three interior angles of a Euclidean triangle is 180 degrees. This theorem follows from the Euclidean parallel postulate and equivalent forms.
Hyperbolic geometry: A non-Euclidean geometry in which infinitely many parallels pass through an external point. It rejects Playfair's uniqueness condition while retaining other Euclidean-style assumptions.
Euclid: An ancient Greek mathematician whose Elements systematized geometry and number theory. His fifth postulate is the historical statement that Playfair's axiom reformulates.
Parallel lines: Coplanar lines that do not intersect, even when extended indefinitely. The axiom asserts uniqueness for a parallel through an external point.
Alternate interior angles: A pair of angles formed on opposite sides of a transversal crossing two lines. Their equality for parallel lines supports standard deductions from the axiom.
Elliptic geometry: A non-Euclidean geometry in which every pair of lines intersects. It admits no parallel through an external point, unlike Playfair's axiom.
Elements: Euclid's mathematical treatise presenting geometry and number theory in an axiomatic structure. Its fifth postulate prompted centuries of attempts to clarify parallelism.
Incidence geometry: Geometry concerned with which points lie on which lines or other geometric objects. The axiom adds a constraint on line incidence and parallelism.
Similar triangles: Triangles with equal corresponding angles and proportional corresponding side lengths. The axiom permits Euclidean constructions of distinct similar triangles at different scales.
