Pliers

Pliers are hand-operated tools with pivoted jaws used to grip, bend, twist, or cut materials. Their leverage lets a hand apply concentrated force to a small workpiece.

Lever: A rigid object that pivots around a fulcrum to transmit or amplify force. The handles and jaws act as lever arms around the pliers’ pivot.
Pincer: A hand tool with two opposing jaws used to grasp or pull objects. Pincers share the opposed-jaw action but commonly serve pulling and prying tasks.
Crimping pliers: Pliers with shaped dies that deform a connector around a wire or fitting. They use controlled jaw pressure to make electrical and mechanical connections.
Wrench: A hand tool designed to apply torque to nuts, bolts, or other fasteners. A wrench fits a fastener more securely, while pliers can slip or damage its faces.
Fulcrum: The fixed point or axis about which a lever rotates. The joint provides the pivot that lets the handles drive the jaws.
Needle-nose pliers: Pliers with long, narrow jaws for reaching into confined spaces and handling small objects. Their tapered jaws show how jaw shape extends access beyond ordinary pliers.
Wire strippers: Tools that remove insulation from electrical wire without cutting its conductor. They are often paired with pliers during electrical wiring, but perform a distinct task.
Pipe wrench: An adjustable wrench with serrated jaws designed to grip and turn pipes. Its self-tightening jaw geometry is made for pipe torque rather than general plier work.
Mechanical advantage: The ratio of a machine’s output force to its input force. Handle length and jaw geometry determine how strongly pliers multiply hand force.
Tongue-and-groove pliers: Adjustable pliers whose joint slides among grooves to vary jaw opening. The grooved joint offers a wider adjustment range than a basic slip joint.
