Plot

Plot is the selection and arrangement of events in a story, including their causal and temporal relations. It differs from a mere sequence of events by shaping how actions lead to consequences.

Story: A narrated account of events involving characters or other agents. Plot is the arrangement of events within a story.
Fabula and syuzhet: A distinction between a story’s inferred chronological events and their presentation in a narrative. It separates event order in the plot from the order in which events are told.
Aristotle: An ancient Greek philosopher whose writings include the Poetics, a foundational work of literary theory. His account made the organization of action central to tragedy.
Storyline: A sequence of events or developments presented as the central course of a narrative. The term can mean a plot sequence without emphasizing its causal construction.
Mystery fiction: Fiction organized around an unresolved crime, puzzle, or secret and its investigation. Withheld causes and evidence make event order central to the plot.
Event: An occurrence or change that takes place at a particular time. Plots are built from selected events and their relations.
Narrative time: The ways a narrative relates the duration and order of events to the time spent telling them. A plot can compress, expand, repeat, or reorder story time.
Poetics: Aristotle’s treatise on poetry and drama, including an influential analysis of tragedy. Its account of plot shaped later ideas about unified dramatic action.
Subplot: A secondary narrative strand that develops alongside a work’s principal plot. It adds a related but distinct course of events within the larger plot.
Detective fiction: Fiction in which an investigator solves a crime or other mystery through inquiry. The investigation reconstructs causes behind events already presented.
