Plot twist

A plot twist is an unexpected development that redirects a story or changes how earlier events are understood. It often revises assumptions about characters, causes, or outcomes.

Dramatic irony: A gap between what an audience knows and what a character knows. Unlike a twist, dramatic irony creates tension through unequal knowledge rather than a sudden revelation.
Oedipus Rex: A Greek tragedy by Sophocles in which Oedipus discovers the truth about his birth and actions. Its recognition transforms the search for a murderer into a revelation about the investigator.
Suspense: A state of uncertainty and anticipation about what will happen next. Suspense prolongs uncertainty; a twist resolves or redirects expectations with new information.
Narrative: An account of connected events, presented through a particular arrangement and perspective. A twist changes how a narrative’s events connect or how its account is interpreted.
Foreshadowing: The use of earlier details to prepare for a later event or revelation. Clues can make a twist surprising on first encounter yet convincing in retrospect.
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd: A 1926 detective novel by Agatha Christie narrated by a character whose role in the crime is concealed. Its ending makes the narrator’s omissions central to the solution.
Mystery fiction: A genre centered on investigating an unexplained event, often a crime, and discovering its solution. A mystery organizes clues toward an answer, while a twist is a particular change in expectation.
Story arc: The progression of events and changes that gives a story its overall shape. A twist can redirect the arc by changing a character’s aims, circumstances, or prospects.
Red herring: A misleading clue or detail that diverts attention from the truth. False leads shape the expectations a twist overturns.
Psycho: A 1960 film by Alfred Hitchcock about a woman who encounters Norman Bates at an isolated motel. Its abrupt shift in focus and revelations about Norman reshape expectations of the story.
