Plywood

Plywood is an engineered wood sheet made by bonding thin veneers with alternating grain directions. This cross-lamination reduces directional weakness and helps the sheet resist splitting and warping.

Wood veneer: A thin sheet of wood peeled or sliced from a log. Plywood is built from veneers stacked into layers.
Wood grain: The visible and structural pattern formed by wood fibers and growth rings. Each veneer’s grain direction determines how that layer carries load.
Structural plywood: Plywood manufactured and graded for load-bearing construction uses. It applies plywood’s layered strength to walls, roofs, and floors.
Ancient Egyptian furniture: Furniture made in ancient Egypt from materials including wood, veneer, and inlay. Ancient veneer use shows that layered woodworking predates modern plywood.
Particle board: An engineered panel made by bonding wood particles with adhesive under heat and pressure. It uses wood particles rather than continuous cross-oriented veneers.
Cross-laminated timber: An engineered wood product made by bonding layers of lumber with alternating grain directions. It uses the same cross-layering principle at a much larger scale.
Wood cell wall: The cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin structure surrounding a wood cell. Its hygroscopic structure explains wood’s response to moisture.
Marine plywood: Plywood made with durable veneers and water-resistant bonding for demanding wet conditions. Its construction targets prolonged exposure to moisture, not permanent submersion.
Immanuel Nobel: A Swedish engineer and inventor who developed early rotary veneer-cutting machinery. His machinery helped make thin veneers practical for industrial manufacture.
Medium-density fibreboard: An engineered wood panel made by pressing wood fibers with resin under heat and pressure. Its uniform fiber structure contrasts with plywood’s visible veneer layers.
