Pneumatophore

A pneumatophore is a specialized root that grows upward from waterlogged soil or sediment. It exposes internal air-conducting tissues to the atmosphere, supplying oxygen to submerged roots.

Aerenchyma: Plant tissue containing interconnected air spaces that facilitate gas movement within roots, stems, or leaves. These air-filled channels carry oxygen from the exposed root toward submerged tissues.
Adventitious root: A root that develops from a plant organ other than the embryonic root. Pneumatophores are specialized roots that arise from other roots or underground stems.
Avicennia marina: A widely distributed mangrove tree found along tropical and subtropical coasts of the Indian and Pacific oceans. Its dense, pencil-shaped pneumatophores emerge around the trunk and branches of its root system.
Prop root: An above-ground root that grows from a stem or branch and braces a plant against mechanical stress. Prop roots mainly support the plant, whereas pneumatophores primarily facilitate gas exchange.
Lenticel: A porous opening in the outer covering of a woody plant that permits gas exchange. Lenticels on pneumatophores allow atmospheric gases to enter their internal tissues.
Root system: The network of roots that anchors a plant and absorbs water and mineral nutrients. A pneumatophore is one specialized component of a plant's broader root system.
Sonneratia alba: A mangrove tree native to tropical Indo-Pacific shorelines, often growing near seaward mangrove edges. Its conical pneumatophores project above soft intertidal sediment.
Stilt root: An oblique supporting root that grows from a stem above ground and anchors the plant in soil. Stilt roots stabilize mangroves in shifting sediment rather than serving chiefly as breathing roots.
Root respiration: The cellular process by which roots use oxygen to release energy from organic compounds. Pneumatophores supply oxygen needed for respiration when soil pores are flooded.
Soil oxygen: The oxygen present in soil pores, available for root respiration and other biological processes. Flooding displaces soil air and sharply restricts the oxygen available to ordinary roots.
