Pneumonia

Pneumonia is infection or inflammation of lung tissue that can fill the air sacs with fluid or pus and impair breathing.

Alveoli: Tiny air sacs in the lungs where oxygen and carbon dioxide move between air and blood. Pneumonia inflames or fills these sacs, disrupting oxygen transfer.
Lower respiratory tract infection: An infection affecting the airways and lung structures below the throat. Pneumonia is an infection of the lower respiratory tract.
Antibiotic: A medicine that kills bacteria or inhibits their growth. Antibiotics treat bacterial pneumonia but do not work against viruses.
Community-acquired pneumonia: Pneumonia acquired outside hospitals or other healthcare facilities. This common category is defined by where infection is acquired.
Acute bronchitis: Short-term inflammation of the large airways, usually caused by a virus. Bronchitis affects airways, whereas pneumonia involves lung tissue and air sacs.
Pulmonary edema: Excess fluid in the lungs that can impair gas exchange. Fluid accumulation can accompany pneumonia and make breathing difficult.
Streptococcus pneumoniae: A bacterium that commonly causes community-acquired pneumonia and other infections. It is a leading bacterial cause of pneumonia.
Antiviral drug: A medicine that interferes with viral replication or infection. Antiviral treatment may help when pneumonia is caused by a susceptible virus.
Hospital-acquired pneumonia: Pneumonia that develops at least 48 hours after hospital admission and was not incubating at admission. Its setting changes likely pathogens and antibiotic choices.
Atelectasis: Partial or complete collapse of lung tissue, reducing ventilation in affected regions. It can resemble pneumonia on imaging but is not itself an infection.
