Pohnpei State

A state of the Federated States of Micronesia comprising Pohnpei Island and several surrounding islands and atolls. Its capital, Palikir, is also the national capital.

Pohnpei Island: A volcanic island in the western Pacific and the largest island in Pohnpei State. It is the state’s main island and home to most of its population.
Spanish East Indies: A Spanish colonial territory in the Pacific that included the Caroline Islands. Spain claimed Pohnpei before German colonial rule began.
Nan Madol: A ruined complex of artificial islets and stone structures off Pohnpei Island, built by the Saudeleur dynasty. This archaeological site is Pohnpei State’s best-known cultural landmark.
Suhpilieu: A traditional chiefly title associated with Pohnpei’s social and political hierarchy. Traditional chiefly authority remains part of the state’s cultural landscape.
Chuuk State: A state of the Federated States of Micronesia centered on Chuuk Lagoon and its surrounding islands. Its large lagoon-based island groups differ from Pohnpei’s high volcanic island and outlying atolls.
Palikir: The capital of the Federated States of Micronesia, located on Pohnpei Island. It is both Pohnpei State’s seat of government and the national capital.
German New Guinea: Germany’s colonial possessions in the western Pacific, including the Caroline Islands from 1899. German administration followed Spain’s sale of the Caroline Islands.
Sokehs Rock: A prominent basalt peak rising above the coast of Pohnpei Island. It is a recognizable landmark near Kolonia and a popular hiking destination.
Bailey Olter: A Pohnpeian politician who served as the second president of the Federated States of Micronesia. His national leadership illustrates Pohnpei’s role in federal politics.
Yap State: A state of the Federated States of Micronesia comprising Yap Island and numerous outer islands. Yap’s western location and distinct island groups contrast with Pohnpei’s central position.
