Pointillism

Pointillism is a painting technique that constructs images from small, distinct dots of color. Viewers perceive the dots as blended colors and continuous forms from a distance.

Optical mixing: The visual blending of separate colors when they are seen together rather than mixed physically. Pointillist dots can appear to combine in the viewer’s eye.
Neo-Impressionism: A late-nineteenth-century art movement that applied systematic methods to color and brushwork. Pointillism became the movement’s most recognizable painting technique.
A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte: An 1884–1886 painting by Georges Seurat depicting people relaxing beside the Seine. Its carefully patterned dots made Pointillism widely recognizable.
