Poker strategy

Poker strategy is the use of probability, behavioral inference, and betting decisions to improve expected results in poker. It varies with the game, opponents, stakes, and position.

Expected value: Expected value is the probability-weighted average of the possible outcomes of a decision. It provides a common measure for comparing bets, calls, folds, and raises.
Poker: Poker is a family of card games in which players wager on hands whose strength is partly hidden. Strategy operates within poker's shared structure of private information and wagering.
Preflop strategy: Preflop strategy covers decisions made before community cards are dealt in games such as Texas hold 'em. Starting-hand choices and raises establish ranges for the rest of the hand.
Game theory optimal: Game theory optimal play is a strategy designed to prevent opponents from exploiting its choices. It offers a baseline against which opponent-specific deviations can be judged.
Pot odds: Pot odds compare the cost of a call with the total pot available after calling. They set the minimum equity a hand needs for a profitable call.
Poker hand: A poker hand is a five-card combination ranked against other combinations under a game's rules. Hand rankings determine which holdings can win at showdown.
Continuation bet: A continuation bet is a postflop bet made by the player who raised before the flop. It applies preflop initiative to pressure opponents after the board appears.
Exploitative play: Exploitative play deliberately deviates from balanced strategy to profit from an opponent's mistakes. It contrasts with unexploitable play by accepting vulnerabilities in exchange for targeted gains.
Equity (poker): Poker equity is a player's share of the pot expected over all possible remaining cards and outcomes. It estimates how often a hand wins or ties when it reaches showdown.
Texas hold 'em: Texas hold 'em is a poker game in which each player receives two private cards and shares five community cards. Its widespread use has produced many standard strategic tools and examples.
