Polar alignment

Polar alignment is the process of pointing a telescope mount’s right-ascension axis parallel to Earth’s rotational axis, allowing the mount to track the sky as Earth turns.

Right ascension: The celestial coordinate analogous to longitude, measured eastward along the celestial equator. The mount’s right-ascension axis must point toward the celestial pole to track this coordinate.
Celestial pole: Either of the two points where Earth’s rotational axis, extended into space, meets the celestial sphere. The mount’s polar axis is aimed at the celestial pole in the relevant hemisphere.
Astrophotography: The practice of photographing astronomical objects and phenomena. Long exposures reveal star trails when polar-axis error is not sufficiently corrected.
GoTo alignment: A procedure that calibrates a computerized mount’s sky model using selected celestial objects. It improves object pointing but does not by itself align the mount’s axis with Earth’s axis.
Declination: The celestial coordinate measuring angular distance north or south of the celestial equator. A polar-aligned mount tracks in right ascension while keeping declination nearly fixed.
North Star: Polaris, the bright star near the north celestial pole. Polaris provides a convenient visual reference, though it does not sit exactly at the pole.
Star tracking: The motion of a telescope mount that follows a celestial object across the sky. Correct polar alignment lets a single-axis drive follow stars with little declination drift.
Alt-azimuth mount: A telescope mount that moves in altitude and azimuth rather than around a polar axis. It points and tracks differently, so traditional polar alignment does not apply.
Polar scope: A small telescope mounted coaxially with an equatorial mount’s right-ascension axis, often marked with a reticle. Its reticle helps place the pole star at the position corresponding to the celestial pole.
Equatorial mount: A telescope mount with one axis parallel to Earth’s rotational axis and another perpendicular to it. Polar alignment is the setup step that gives this mount its intended sky-following geometry.
