Pole vault

Pole vault is a track-and-field event in which athletes plant a flexible pole, use it to rise over a crossbar, and land on a padded mat. The bar is raised between attempts, and the winner clears the greatest height.

Pole-vault approach: The run-up in which a pole vaulter accelerates while carrying the pole toward the planting box. Approach speed supplies much of the energy that the vault converts into height.
Pole-vault crossbar: A horizontal bar supported at a set height that pole vaulters must clear without dislodging. Each attempt tests whether the athlete can pass over this movable height marker.
Pole jumping: A form of locomotion or sport in which a person uses a pole to cross an obstacle or gap. Pole vault grew from practical and recreational forms of pole-assisted jumping.
High jump: A track-and-field event in which athletes jump over a horizontal bar without using a pole. Both events clear a raised bar, but only pole vault uses a pole for propulsion.
Pole plant: The action of placing the pole tip into the planting box as an athlete takes off. A well-timed plant connects the run-up to the pole's loading phase.
Pole-vault planting box: A recessed box at the end of the runway that receives the tip of a pole during the plant. It anchors the pole at takeoff and directs its load.
Ancient Greek athletics: Organized athletic practices and contests in ancient Greece, including running, wrestling, and jumping events. Ancient pole-assisted jumping is sometimes compared with vaulting, though it was not modern pole vault.
Long jump: A track-and-field event in which athletes sprint and jump for distance into a sand pit. Unlike pole vault, long jump measures horizontal distance rather than bar height.
Pole-vault takeoff: The final ground contact that launches a pole vaulter upward as the pole enters the box. Takeoff timing determines how effectively the vaulter loads the pole.
Track and field: A collection of athletic running, jumping, and throwing events contested on tracks and field areas. Pole vault is one of track and field's field events.
