Polish–Soviet War

The Polish–Soviet War was fought from 1919 to 1921 between the Second Polish Republic and Soviet Russia over borders and influence in Eastern Europe. The Peace of Riga ended the war and established their frontier.

Battle of Warsaw: A 1920 battle in which Polish forces halted and drove back the Red Army near Warsaw. Its outcome reversed the Soviet advance and shaped the war’s final phase.
Second Polish Republic: The independent Polish state established in 1918 after more than a century of partition. Its leaders sought secure eastern borders as the state emerged from imperial rule.
Józef Piłsudski: A Polish statesman and military commander who served as chief of state and led Polish forces during the war. He directed Polish policy and military strategy, including the 1920 Kyiv offensive.
Kyiv offensive: A 1920 Polish-led military campaign that captured Kyiv with allied Ukrainian forces before Soviet counterattacks drove them west. It brought the war deep into Ukraine and prompted a major Soviet counteroffensive.
Treaty of Riga: The 1921 treaty that ended the Polish–Soviet War and established Poland’s eastern frontier. Its terms fixed the boundary and allocated territory after the armistice.
Battle of the Niemen River: A September 1920 battle in which Polish forces defeated Soviet armies near the Niemen River. This Polish victory strengthened the position that led to armistice negotiations.
Russian Civil War: The 1917–1922 conflict among the Bolsheviks, anti-Bolshevik forces, and other factions in the former Russian Empire. The war unfolded amid the collapse of Russian authority and Bolshevik efforts to regain control.
Mikhail Tukhachevsky: A Soviet military commander who led the Western Front during the 1920 campaign against Poland. His advance toward Warsaw culminated in the defeat that changed the war’s course.
Battle of Lwów: The 1920 fighting around Lwów between Polish forces and the Soviet First Cavalry Army. The southern campaign exposed the strain on Polish forces during the Soviet advance.
Polish–Soviet population exchange: The movement of people across the Polish–Soviet border under arrangements made after the Peace of Riga. The new frontier divided communities and prompted organized resettlement.
