Political asylum

Political asylum is protection a state grants to people who flee persecution in another country. It prevents their return to places where they face serious danger.

Refugee status determination: A legal process for deciding whether a person meets the definition of a refugee. Authorities use this process to assess whether an asylum claim establishes a need for protection.
Persecution: Severe harm or sustained discrimination directed at a person, often for a characteristic or belief. A well-founded fear of persecution is central to the Convention refugee definition.
League of Nations refugee work: International efforts between the world wars to protect and assist displaced people. These early arrangements preceded the postwar treaty system governing refugee protection.
Extradition: The formal surrender of a person by one state to another for prosecution or punishment. An asylum claim can prevent surrender when the requesting country poses a risk of persecution.
Refugee integration: The process through which refugees participate in the social, economic, and civic life of a host society. Recognized asylum can enable long-term residence, work, education, and community participation.
Non-refoulement: The principle prohibiting a state from returning someone to a place where they face specified serious threats. This principle bars return to persecution or other qualifying danger, even before a claim is resolved.
1951 Refugee Convention: The treaty defining refugee status and setting out protections and duties concerning refugees. It provides the principal international framework behind modern asylum law.
Nansen passport: An identity certificate introduced in 1922 for stateless refugees under League of Nations auspices. It offered displaced people documentation and a limited means of crossing borders.
Temporary protected status: A temporary immigration protection granted to eligible nationals of designated countries facing unsafe return conditions. Unlike individualized asylum, this protection usually rests on country-wide conditions and a temporary designation.
Family reunification: A legal process allowing family members separated by migration to live together in one country. Protection status may provide a route for close relatives to join a person granted asylum.
