Political obligation

Political obligation is a moral duty to obey a state or its laws. Philosophers disagree about whether such a duty exists and what could justify it.

Consent theory: The view that political authority or obligation can arise when people voluntarily agree to accept it. It grounds obedience in an individual's voluntary agreement to political rule.
Philosophical anarchism: The view that states lack legitimate authority or that people have no general moral duty to obey them. It denies the general political obligation that this debate seeks to justify.
Thomas Hobbes: An English philosopher whose political theory defended sovereign authority as a remedy for insecurity and conflict. His account ties political obedience to authorization and protection from violence.
Unjust law: A law that conflicts with moral standards of justice or imposes wrongful burdens. It raises the question of whether political duties extend to morally wrongful commands.

Martin Luther King Jr.: An American civil rights leader who defended nonviolent direct action against racial segregation and injustice. His account of just and unjust laws shows how moral judgment can qualify obedience.
Democratic authority: The claimed right of democratic institutions to make binding decisions through procedures of popular participation and representation. Democracy may strengthen a state's claim to obedience, but the extent remains contested.
