Political pluralism

Political pluralism is the coexistence of competing political groups, viewpoints, and organizations within a society. It treats organized disagreement as a normal feature of political life.

Interest group: An organized group that seeks to influence public policy without seeking to govern directly. Interest groups turn shared concerns into organized claims on political institutions.
Political party: An organization that seeks political power by nominating candidates and advancing a governing program. Parties aggregate viewpoints into programs and compete for public office.
Elite theory: The view that a relatively small, cohesive group holds disproportionate political power. Elite theory disputes the pluralist claim that power is dispersed among competing groups.
Robert Dahl: An American political scientist known for influential studies of democracy and political power. Dahl’s research framed pluralist democracy as competition among multiple power centers.
Lobbying: Attempts to influence public officials or legislation on behalf of particular interests. Lobbying is one route through which organized groups press competing demands.
Freedom of association: The right to form, join, and leave groups without unjustified state interference. Independent organizations cannot compete freely without the ability to associate.
Corporatism: A system in which the state organizes or recognizes a limited set of groups to represent social interests. Corporatism channels representation through officially recognized bodies rather than open competition.
Polyarchy: Robert Dahl’s term for a modern political system with broad participation and meaningful public contestation. Polyarchy describes the institutional conditions under which pluralist competition can operate.
Coalition government: A government formed when multiple political parties share executive power. Coalition bargaining makes party competition part of governing rather than only elections.
Freedom of speech: The right to express opinions without censorship or punishment by the state, subject to legal limits. Competing viewpoints require protections for public expression.
