Political prisoner

A person imprisoned primarily because of political activity, beliefs, or opposition to a government. The designation is contested when authorities cite ordinary criminal charges or security concerns.

Prisoner of conscience: A person imprisoned for peacefully expressing or acting on beliefs or identity, without using or advocating violence. This narrower category captures cases where imprisonment targets peaceful conviction rather than violent political action.
Arbitrary arrest: An arrest lacking a lawful basis or safeguards against unjustified detention. Authorities may use arrest powers to detain opponents without a genuine criminal basis.
Aung San Suu Kyi: A Myanmar politician and former state counsellor who spent years under house arrest before entering government. Her detention under military rule became a prominent international symbol of political imprisonment.
Political offense: An act treated as criminal because it challenges or threatens a political order. A political offense may be charged directly, while a political prisoner can face ostensibly ordinary charges.
Amnesty International: An international nongovernmental organization that campaigns against human-rights abuses. Its prisoner-of-conscience campaigns helped popularize a distinct standard for identifying political imprisonment.
Show trial: A public trial whose outcome is predetermined to serve political purposes. A staged prosecution can give political detention the appearance of judicial legitimacy.
Vaclav Havel: A Czech writer and dissident imprisoned under communist rule who later became president of Czechoslovakia. His prosecution connected political imprisonment with dissent expressed through writing and civic activism.
Common criminal: A person convicted of an offense treated as ordinary crime rather than political opposition. The distinction turns on whether imprisonment primarily punishes political activity or an ordinary offense.
Nelson Mandela: A South African anti-apartheid leader who was imprisoned from 1962 until 1990 and later became president. His imprisonment became a defining international example of detention for political opposition.
Emergency powers: Exceptional legal authorities granted to governments during declared crises. Governments may use emergency rules to suspend safeguards and detain perceived opponents.
