Political spectrum

A model that arranges political beliefs or positions along one or more dimensions, commonly including a left–right axis. Its dimensions simplify political differences rather than capturing every belief or context.

Left–right political spectrum: A political spectrum that places positions along a left–right axis, often concerning equality, hierarchy, and economic organization. This is the most familiar single axis used to locate political positions.
Horseshoe theory: A theory that extreme political positions on the left and right resemble each other more than moderate positions do. It challenges the assumption that positions become steadily more different toward opposite ends.
Political party: An organized group that seeks political power by contesting elections and coordinating public policy. Parties are often placed on a spectrum to summarize their platforms and alliances.
French Revolution: The political and social upheaval that transformed France from 1789 and ended its monarchy. The left–right political distinction originated in seating arrangements during its revolutionary assemblies.
Political ideology: A coherent set of political ideas about society, government, power, and how they should be organized. Ideologies supply the beliefs that spectrum models attempt to locate.
Nolan Chart: A political diagram that maps positions using personal and economic freedom as separate dimensions. Its axes organize political differences differently from the conventional left–right line.
Political polling: The systematic measurement of public opinion through surveys of selected populations. Polls use ideological scales to describe respondents and compare political groups.
National Assembly (France): The representative assembly formed in France in 1789 during the early French Revolution. Its seating conventions helped turn left and right into political labels.
Political attitude: An individual's evaluative orientation toward political institutions, policies, groups, or events. Attitudes can vary across issues even when a person receives one overall spectrum label.
Political pluralism: The view that political power and social influence are distributed among multiple groups and interests. Pluralism highlights competing interests that a single spectrum can flatten into one ranking.
