Political theology

Political theology studies how theological ideas shape political authority and public life, and how political arrangements express or challenge religious claims.

Sovereignty: The supreme authority to make and enforce decisions within a political order. Political theology often asks whether sovereignty belongs ultimately to God, a ruler, or a people.
Divine right of kings: The doctrine that a monarch’s authority comes directly from God and is not subject to earthly accountability. It shows how a theological claim can authorize a specific form of political rule.
Augustine of Hippo: A late antique Christian theologian whose writings shaped Western thought about earthly rule and divine justice. The City of God distinguishes political peace from the ultimate community ordered toward God.
Liberalism: A political tradition emphasizing individual rights, limited government, and protection of personal freedom. Liberal political orders seek legitimacy through rights and consent rather than a single religious authority.
Secularism: A range of views and arrangements that distinguish religion from political institutions or limit religion’s public authority. Its different meanings shape debates over whether political life can be independent of theology.
Civil religion: Shared beliefs, rituals, and symbols that give a political community a sacred or transcendent character. It explains how states can use religious forms without adopting an established theology.
Thomas Hobbes: A seventeenth-century English philosopher who defended sovereign authority as a remedy for civil conflict. Leviathan recasts biblical authority and political obedience within a theory of sovereign power.
The secularization thesis: The claim that modernization tends to reduce religion’s social influence and public significance. Political theology questions whether modern politics has truly escaped religious structures and concepts.
Theocracy: A system of government in which religious authority directly governs or legitimates political rule. It is a concentrated case of theological claims organizing political authority.
Sacral kingship: A form of monarchy in which the ruler’s office is understood as sacred or divinely sanctioned. It connects political office to sacred status through ritual and inherited authority.
