Politics of China

Politics of China encompasses the institutions, ideologies, processes, and power relations shaping Chinese governance, especially the one-party system of the People’s Republic of China.

Chinese Communist Party: The ruling political party of the People’s Republic of China, founded in 1921. It directs the state and occupies the central position in China’s political system.
Marxism–Leninism: A political doctrine combining Marxist social theory with Leninist ideas of party organization and revolution. It supplies foundational language and organizational ideas for the ruling party.
Chinese Communist Revolution: The revolutionary struggle that brought the Chinese Communist Party to power in 1949. Its victory established the ruling party and the People’s Republic.
Liberal democracy: A political system combining competitive elections with protections for civil liberties and legal limits on government. Its multiparty competition contrasts with the Chinese Communist Party’s monopoly on national rule.
National People's Congress: China’s national legislature, constitutionally the country’s highest organ of state power. Its formal legislative authority operates within the party-led political system.
Socialism with Chinese characteristics: The Chinese Communist Party’s framework for combining socialist rule with policies adapted to China’s conditions. It is the party’s principal account of its governing model.
Chinese Civil War: The armed conflict between the Chinese Communist Party and the Kuomintang, ending with Communist victory on the mainland in 1949. Its outcome determined which movement founded the modern mainland state.
One-party state: A political system in which one party holds a legal or practical monopoly on governing power. This broader category places China alongside other systems dominated by a single party.
State Council of the People's Republic of China: China’s central government and highest administrative organ, headed by the premier. It administers national policy and coordinates government ministries.
Constitution of the People's Republic of China: The supreme legal document defining the People’s Republic of China’s state structure, rights, and governing principles. It specifies the formal offices and powers through which the state is organized.
